This far surpasses official development assistance in Africa, highlighting the power individuals in the diaspora hold through their giving. In 2021, Africans sent over $95 billion in remittances to their home countries. ![]() Without genuine love and care for people, our work will be meaningless.Īn example of pure philanthropy that resonates with me is diaspora giving, which I have highlighted before. This meaning has informed my whole approach to giving. For me, philanthropy is about a love for humanity. I believe that philanthropy is about more than white papers and strategy documents. Collaborating with experienced organisations, government bodies, and experts ensures the sustainability and effectiveness of our work. We must acknowledge that others possess valuable knowledge and experience. ![]() What a lesson! Now, we thoroughly investigate project needs, compatibility with our work, and implementation pathways.Īnother lesson is the importance of continuous learning for long-term impact. After about one year of paying school and uniform fees, I discovered these ‘orphans’ did not exist. Acting emotionally, I committed to supporting a man caring for 12 orphans. They shape us and help us grow.Īs philanthropists, one mistake we might make is isolating ourselves from problems and assuming we know best.Ī particularly memorable example was one of our first cohorts of scholarship recipients. Making mistakes along the way, learning from them, and finding your path amidst doubts are all part of the journey. Our work has also expanded to include health, nutrition, and disaster management.īut nothing could have prepared us for the experience, just as nothing can prepare you for many of the challenges and opportunities life presents. ![]() Our philanthropy started by supporting 12 children, today, over 350,000 children have received an education through our intervention. My husband and I established a scholarship programme for children who had lost their parents to this disease. Ignited by the severe impact of the HIV and AIDS pandemic, which hit my family and community hard, I felt convicted to act. During my address, I shared a few lessons I’ve learned over the years as a philanthropist.Īs many of you know, I started my philanthropic journey in 1996. I recently had the honour of delivering the FORUM 2023 Summer Lecture. Make mistakes, make them often but learn from them. ![]()
